India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan set a new record for the most Twenty20 International (T20I) runs in a calendar year by an Indian player on Sunday during the fifth and final match against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton. Rebounding from an early loss of wickets, India built a total of 191 runs behind aggressive half-centuries from Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer.
Kishan surpasses calendar-year milestone
Kishan smashed 61 runs off just 32 deliveries, hitting five sixes and five boundaries to spark India's innings after an early setback. The performance took his 2026 T20I run total to 1,220 across 37 matches, breaking the previous Indian calendar-year record of 1,164 runs set by Suryakumar Yadav in 2022.
The innings also marked another major career milestone for the 28-year-old, who became only the seventh Indian cricketer to cross 2,000 career runs in T20 Internationals, reaching 2,016 runs across 69 matches. Kishan was also a key contributor during India's championship run at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup earlier in the year, where he scored 317 runs.
After entering the match following a score of zero in the previous fixture, Kishan stabilized India's innings alongside skipper Shreyas Iyer. The pair combined for a rapid 93-run partnership for the third wicket. Iyer contributed an explosive 50 runs off 23 balls, featuring four sixes and three boundaries. Subsequent contributions from Naman Dhir (33) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (22) pushed India to a final total of 191 runs.
New Zealand bowling attack and early collapse
New Zealand pace bowler Adam Milne created immediate pressure for India by taking four wickets during his spell. Milne dismissed both Indian openers early during the powerplay—the opening six overs where fielding rules limit outfield defenders—removing Abhishek Sharma for one run and Sanju Samson for four runs.
Despite the early top-order stumble, India's middle order adapted quickly to post a competitive total. New Zealand bowlers Nathan Smith and Blair Tickner supported Milne's effort, taking two wickets each as the hosts sought to restrict India on home soil.
Having already secured an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match T20I series, India entered the Hamilton fixture looking to seal a 4-1 series victory, while New Zealand fought for a final victory on home turf.
Selection controversy sparks fan debate
While India found success on the scoreboard, the early loss of Sharma and Samson renewed criticism on social media regarding team selection. Many fans questioned why young batting talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was left out of the starting lineup for a second consecutive match.
Sooryavanshi had impressed during the third match of the series by scoring 45 runs off 19 deliveries while filling in during Kishan's brief injury absence. However, he was benched upon Kishan's return for the final two matches, even though India had already wrapped up the series victory.
Addressing line-up decisions prior to the match, India head coach Gautam Gambhir defended the coaching staff's approach, noting that his job is to make effective choices rather than popular ones. Gambhir emphasized the importance of providing security and consistent opportunities to players with established records.
